Produced by Zoe Amar Digital, Corndel and Microsoft, this white paper draws on data from the 2026 Charity Digital Skills Report, a June 2026 roundtable with senior charity leaders, and evidence from other sectors. It looks at what the charity workforce could look like in 2036, and what leaders, trustees and funders need to do now to get there.
It's written for charity leaders, trustees, funders, infrastructure bodies, policy makers and organisations that support the sector.

"In ten years, AI will affect every role in the sector. If we get this right and make our organisations as good as they can be, there isn't one role that won't be impacted. The question is what are the things we value most that we don't want to lose hold of."
- Every role will be affected. AI's impact won't be limited to digital and tech teams. Staff at every level will need the skills to work alongside tools such as agentic AI.
- Skills are the defining challenge. The skills gap is the same in large and small charities, and runs from volunteers to CEOs and boards.
- Human connection is the sector's differentiator. AI should create more space for the value of human work, not replace it.
- Planning needs to start now, with equity built in. Workforce plans must take account of who is most affected. Funders need to support digital core costs and workforce transition.
