Corndel and Credit Suisse launch the UK’s first DevOps Engineering Apprenticeship

Corndel and global investment bank, Credit Suisse, have launched the UK’s very first DevOps Engineering apprenticeship programme for a cohort of 15 learners from their General Markets IT function.

In partnership with Softwire, a leading digital consultancy, the Diploma programme will upskill existing technology professionals and support Credit Suisse to unlock the huge potential of cloud technologies, including increased productivity, faster deployment of new technologies and more reliable systems.

Credit Suisse leading the way in DevOps capability investment

Steve Pegg, UK Regional Head of Global Markets Technology at Credit Suisse commented: “We’re very pleased to launch this pioneering programme to develop and improve DevOps excellence across our team. Central to our workforce strategy, we are committed to developing our staff, attracting talent into Global Markets Technology and to foster our core engineering culture.” Corndel and Credit Suisse were both members of the trailblazer group, the name given to the businesses and training providers which worked together to design the DevOps Engineering Standard.

Aaron David Knauf, DevOps Lead for Equities Risk at Credit Suisse and participant of the programme said: “Ensuring our engineering community is equipped with the right skills is the key to getting the most from our ongoing investment in cloud technology. As part of the apprenticeship, candidates are expected to apply the skills they learn in their day-to-day work.

Personalised coaching for each learner

Over the next 18 months, participants will benefit from fortnightly 1-to-1 personal coaching and a cutting-edge curriculum designed by DevOps practitioners. The programme, accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, will develop learners to become skilled in:

  • Writing basic application logic and scripts in Python
  • Building a continuous integration pipeline
  • Performing routine security audits and patching vulnerabilities
  • Setting up secure servers on the cloud
  • Extending your build pipeline to include continuous deployment both on- and off-cloud
  • Setting up monitoring tools and debugging issues through recorded logs
  • Improving time-to-productive using containers
  • Configuring servers using infrastructure as code.

The DevOps Engineering Diploma is both detailed and relevant, and it has given me a fresh perspective on how to approach delivery in a more holistic way” said Chris Cairns, QIS Trading Solutions Tech Lead at Credit Suisse.

Roman Korol, Release and Environment Management Lead at Credit Suisse added: “The DevOps Engineering Diploma has given me exposure to a wide variety of tools, practices and skills needed to work on automation & elimination of manual tasks.

The growing need for high-performing DevOps Engineers

Research shows that 63% of big businesses have already implemented DevOps with a further 27% planning to do so in the next 12 months. Having access to the right talent is key to the success of DevOps. As adoption continues to soar, competition for the best talent makes it increasingly difficult to access the skills needed to resource DevOps teams. Mirroring trends across the industry, recruiting DevOps Engineers is becoming harder and more expensive. This means new and sustainable talent solutions such as the Credit Suisse programme are critical.

In 2017, DevOps roles comprised 5.5% of all IT jobs advertised in the UK. In 2020, this figure is now close to 11.5%, and is rising fast.
