Alan Leghorn is a First Line Manager at Movianto UK Ltd. He runs a depot, planning vehicle routes, dealing with customer queries and managing the day to day operation. He is also a graduate of the Corndel Level 3 Diploma in Management and has just received a CMI Award of Excellence. Alan has been entered into the CMI Regional Awards.

Alan’s hard work and dedication to his studies was noted by CMI, along with his ability to apply these new-found skills for the benefit of his organisation. Alan’s work-based project, which is to provide scanning visibility throughout the network, is currently being looked at as a major area to improve and could soon be adopted by the business. This project directly addressed a core business objective.

By applying a deep understanding of the mechanics of the organisation and aligning these to objectives and a good business case — skills learnt on the Corndel programme, Alan produced a workable business solution. This solution, which involved prevention of loss of inventory, reducing duplication of effort and ability to plan resources at a depot level, was presented by his Director to a Vice President and is a work in progress, to be adopted by the business. Alan’s solution will save Movianto tens of thousands of pounds. He has been given further projects, as a result of this high-quality proposal.

When Alan was promoted from van driver to First Line Manager, the General Manager for his region, felt Alan would benefit from the Corndel Diploma. Alan admits to finding the work daunting initially: ‘I looked at the volume of modules I had to complete in one year and got a bit overwhelmed, but when you break it down into bite-sized chunks, it was easily manageable. I ended up finishing 6 weeks early. Most of the content in the modules was so relevant to my role, that I applied it daily, which really brought it to life.’

Upon embarking on the Corndel programme, Alan had never had a need to use Power point. Throughout the course, Alan was supported by his personal coach and can now confidently produce and deliver presentations for Managers, Directors and colleagues. As a result of these skills he has taken on the role of Head of Engagement for his Depot. ‘My coach, Jaclyn has been a major part of my journey and development, not only as manager, but as an individual.’

Alan describes the Corndel programme as ‘an incredible journey. My approach to management when I started this programme compared to now, is like night and day. I understand the differences between a leader and a manager. I can approach issues from many different perspectives. I am a confident, hard-working, dedicated manager, with a wide-ranging set of skills to support my future career.’

Alan is really enjoying his role and is keen to continue his studies: ‘I would like to do the Corndel Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management, either through my company or independently.’
