Capita uses its Apprenticeship Levy to drive digital transformation

13 August 2020 by Heidi Marshall

In partnership with Corndel, Capita has now launched its first DevOps Engineering programme, designed to modernise the skillset of its existing technology workforce and fast-track its digital transformation.

Capita’s 63,000 workforce enjoys access to a huge range of unique and diverse development opportunities, which offer real career progression. With more than 500 employees already on Corndel’s leadership and management and project management apprenticeship programmes, Capita decided to offer the new-to-market 18-month DevOps Engineering apprenticeship diploma to 21 employees from across the business in the first cohort.

Building DevOps capability

Capita helps millions of people and businesses every day by providing consulting, digital services and software solutions. They operate globally across six divisions: Software; Technology Solutions; People Solutions; Customer Management; Government Services and Specialist Services. Bringing together the traditionally siloed functions of software development and IT operations, the cloud-based nature of DevOps means that IT teams can collaborate, experiment and continually improve.

With an established DevOps culturelarge businesses are able to innovate and respond quickly to changing requirements. Never was this more important – or timely – for an organisation like Capita and the clients they serve. The challenge iadopting a DevOps culture is that it takes specialist tools, knowledge and a shift in mindset, which comes at a cost. Capita have chosen to use their  Apprenticeship Levy to upskill valued existing employees to overcome this challenge.

The learners, who will be joined in January by colleagues in a second cohort, will benefit from the unrivalled expertise of Corndel’s delivery partner, Softwire. The cutting-edge curriculum is delivered over 18 months through regular workshops and fortnightly one-to-one coaching sessions with a DevOps practitioner. Participants will graduate from the programme with an industry recognised accreditation from the Chartered Institute for IT.

Dean Jones, Director of Strategy & Architecture for Capita's Technology Solutions division commented, ‘Through Corndel, we’re delighted to be bringing in such expertise at a senior level to upskill a range of our people from DevOps Managers to Support Analysts, and Network Consultants to Solutions Architects. These are highly skilled technologists who may or may not already be in a defined DevOps role, but who all share a passion for collaborative problem-solving and an acknowledgement that DevOps is the future of their trade.’

Capita’s Rosanna Williamson, Head of Performance and Developmenthas championed this programme and is excited to see it up and running so quickly. ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for our first cohort of learners who will develop their DevOps skills and support the wider DevOps transition. Having a talented group of colleagues building their DevOps capability will not only benefit Capita and our clients, but offers the individual learners enviable career development. To be able to deliver this through our Apprenticeship Levy is ideal. We look forward to following them on their journey.’
